How to Crate Train Your Puppy: A Step-by-Step Guide

Crates are an invaluable tool when raising a puppy. They are essential for:
Faster, more effective potty training
Keeping your puppy safe when unsupervised
Safe and stress-free travel

So, how do you train your puppy to love their crate? Follow these simple steps!

Step 1: Choose the Right Crate

Size Matters – The crate should be just big enough for your puppy to stand up, turn around, and sleep comfortably. It should feel like a cozy den, not a large open space.
Avoid Oversized Crates – If the crate is too big, your puppy may use one side as a bathroom. Many wire crates come with dividers, allowing you to adjust the size as your puppy grows.

Step 2: Introducing the Crate

1️⃣ Pick the Right Spot – Place the crate in a quiet, low-distraction area.
2️⃣ Keep Your Puppy on a Leash – This prevents them from wandering away during training.
3️⃣ Make the Crate Inviting – Place delicious treats inside the crate before your puppy enters.
4️⃣ Let Your Puppy Explore – Allow them to go in on their own, with minimal interference.
5️⃣ Praise & Reward – As they eat the treats inside, calmly praise them without startling them.
6️⃣ Reinforce the Experience – Before the pre-loaded treats are gone, offer additional treats one at a time inside the crate.

Closing the Door for the First Time
After a couple of minutes:

  • Gently close the crate door.
  • Wait a few seconds, then kneel down and open it again.
  • Immediately reward your puppy with treats inside the crate.
  • Repeat this 10 times in quick succession.

💡 Goal: Your puppy should remain inside, eagerly anticipating rewards instead of rushing out when the door opens.

Step 3: Teaching the Puppy to Enter the Crate on Command

1️⃣ Let Your Puppy Exit the Crate – Keep their leash on so they don’t run away.
2️⃣ Wait Silently – Kneel near the crate, face it, and say nothing.
3️⃣ Allow Them to Go Back In on Their Own – As soon as they do, reward them immediately!
4️⃣ Avoid Luring – Don’t use treats to bribe them inside. Let them enter on their own, then reward.
5️⃣ Add a Command – Once they’re willingly entering the crate, start saying “Crate!” to pair the command with the behavior.

🔄 Repeat until your puppy happily runs into the crate in anticipation of a reward!

Step 4: Making the Crate a Positive Experience

Start with Short Sessions – Leave your puppy in the crate for a few minutes at a time while you’re home.
Associate Crate Time with Good Things

  • Offer a frozen Kong or chew toy when crating your puppy.
  • Feed your puppy their meals inside the crate.
Don’t Only Use the Crate When You Leave – Occasionally crate your puppy while you’re still home, so they don’t associate it with being left alone.

Step 5: Handling Crying in the Crate

🐾 Puppies will cry at some point—know how to respond!

1️⃣ Distinguish Between Needs & Tantrums – Listen to your puppy’s tone:

  • If they just went potty, it’s likely a tantrum.
  • If it’s been a while since their last potty break, they may need to go out.
2️⃣ Ignore Tantrums – If your puppy is just protesting, cover the crate with a sheet and wait for them to settle.
3️⃣ Time the Release Correctly – Once your puppy quiets down, wait 2-3 minutes, then let them out.
4️⃣ Never Let Them Out While Barking – Otherwise, they learn that barking gets them released.

💡 Key Tip: Stick to a consistent potty schedule to minimize unnecessary barking for bathroom breaks.

Step 6: Leaving the House

When leaving your puppy home alone for the first time:
Practice Crate Time While You’re Home First – Ensure they’re comfortable before leaving.
Provide a Safe Chew or Frozen Kong – Keeps them occupied.
Use Background Noise – Play soothing music or leave the TV on for comfort.
Keep Outings Short at First – Gradually increase the time left alone.
Stay Calm When Returning Home – Avoid overly excited greetings. Walk in, wait for your puppy to settle, then calmly let them out for a potty break.

Step 7: Crate Training for Car Travel

🐾 Teaching your puppy to travel in a crate makes trips safer and easier!

Start with Short Rides – Let your puppy get comfortable in the crate at home first, then introduce short car rides.
Make the Experience Positive – Give high-value treats when they get in the crate.
Use Safe Chews for Distraction – Provide a frozen Kong or No-Hide chew during rides.
Lift Puppies In & Out – Avoid joint stress by carrying young puppies in and out of the vehicle.

💡 Safety Note: NEVER leave a puppy alone in a hot or enclosed car. In cool weather, bring them along whenever possible—they love seeing the sights!

Additional Crate Training Tips & Rules

Never Use the Crate as Punishment – If your puppy misbehaves, don’t send them to the crate in frustration. Instead, happily guide them inside and reward them for going in.
Don’t Overuse the Crate – Puppies need a balance of crate time, playtime, and exercise. Follow a structured schedule to ensure they get enough activity.
Keep Reinforcing Crate Training

  • Keep a bowl of treats on top of the crate.
  • Every time your puppy runs into the crate, reward them!
  • Continue rewarding crate use throughout their life for long-term success.
